Mountain Meltdown 2 for 1

On warm spring days, Lutsen's location along Lake Superior keeps the ski area 10-15 degrees cooler than the rest of Minnesota. As the sun warms the land, the heat rises, creating a draft and pulling an offshore breeze. Since Lake Superior remains fairly constant at about 40º, this breeze is much cooler that the surrounding air and acts as an "air conditioner for the slopes." The net result - when the rest of the Midwest is hit with spring days reaching 65-70º, afternoons along the North Shore remain in the 40's, allowing Lutsen to ski well into April.

In addition to weather advantages, Lutsen remains open because of our 'snow farming' strategy. By stockpiling snow in piles 15-20' deep, we can better manage our base. As areas wear thin, snow can be moved to keep consistent cover on the whole run. Grooming tools, including state-of-the-art power tillers and a renovator, which allows the base to be turned over when freezing conditions exist, ensure a new surface of corduroy each morning.
