Sawtooth Mountain
Hiking Trails
Lutsen Mountains features several miles of hiking trails, incluing hiking along the famed Superior Hiking Trail. Combine a hike with a ride on the Mountain Tram for easy access to mountaintop trailheads that lead you through wildflower meadows and deep forests, past waterfalls, wildlife and spectacular mountain overlooks.
Superior Hiking Trail (SHT)
This famed trail travels the distance of Minnesota’s North Shore from Duluth to the Canadian border with the section traversing Lutsen Mountains as one of the most dramatic segments. Mountaintop vistas, deep cedar forests, maple ridgelines and Poplar River Falls are all part of this spectacular, rugged trail. Connect to the Oberg Mountain trailhead 6.8 miles to the west, the Caribou Lake trailhead 6.2 miles to the east, or ride the gondola to the Moose Mountain summit, and return to the base area via the spur trail and the SHT on a lovely 4.5-mile loop.
Moose Mountain Ridgeline Trail
Traveling the entire length of Moose Mountain along the maple ridgeline, this trail rewards hikers with spectacular vistas of Lake Superior, the Superior National Forest, Oberg Mountain and Rollins Creek. From Moose Mountain to the Base Area, the long loop is 8 miles, bringing hikers along the ridgeline, down the south-facing slope of Moose Mountain, through the Poplar River valley, and ending at the Base Area.
Summit Loop
This short, scenic loop around the open meadows at the summit of Moose Mountain features interpretive signs introducing hikers to the critters, flora and fauna of the North Shore.
Spur Trail Loop
On the Moose Mountain Summit, this oval loop combines the highlights of three great trails. The Superior Hiking Trail spur trail traverses the steep, rugged north face of Moose Mountain. Approximately ½ mile along the spur trail, connect with the Moose Mountain Ridgeline trail, and return to the gondola summit via the open meadows of the Summit Loop. A great sampler loop just slightly over a mile in length.
Poplar River Falls Trail
Stand above Poplar River Falls by hiking to the bridge on the “North Road,” an easy half-mile hike. This trail leads hikers to the Superior Hiking Trail and other woodland trails.
Other Wooodland Trails
These old Mountain Bike trails and work roads will take hikers for miles around Lutsen Mountains’ 1000 acres. Trails vary from easy to difficult, and hikers should travel carefully as trails may be unmaintained and/or traveled by maintenance vehicles.
